According to the Hindu Scriptures, there was a Sage named Mrikandu. He and his wife were childless. So to get the child he started to worship and peanance of the Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was pleased and asked Mrikandu Rishi to ask for a boon. The sage told the desire to have a child. Lord Shiva gave him two options and asked him to choose from it. The first option was that the child would be foolish and he will have long life. The second option was that the child would be very intelligent but he would die at the age of 16. The Sage Mrikandu choose the second option.
After the birth he told his son Markandeya that he would die when he will be 16 years old. To avoid this premature death the Sage Markandeya started to worship Lord Shiva and he composed the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. He did spiritual practices and peanance and recieved the “siddhi” for Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. Lord Shiva was pleased and gave a boon to the Sage Markandeya to become immortal. He also gave the blessing that whoever chants this mantra will be saved from untimely death.

Meaning – We worship the three-eyed One, who is fragrant and who nourishes all. Like the fruit falls off from the bondage of the stem, may we be liberated from death, from mortality.
